In brief
The collapse of a major bridge in Brazil raises alarm over possible contamination from lorries carrying toxic chemicals, resulting in casualties and ongoing rescue efforts.
A significant bridge collapse in northern Brazil has ignited concerns over environmental contamination due to the spill of dangerous substances into the river below. The incident occurred over the weekend, claiming the lives of four individuals, while more than ten others remain missing after the central span of the bridge connecting Tocantins and Maranhão states crumbled on Sunday afternoon. The dramatic situation unfolded as lorries transporting thousands of litres of pesticides and sulphuric acid plunged into the river, raising urgent questions about chemical leakage. Recovery diving operations have been halted while authorities assess the extent of the spill. Footage taken by local councillor Elias Junior, who had previously highlighted cracks in the bridge, captured the moment of the collapse, leaving him and witnesses shocked.Search and rescue teams are currently operating from boats in the river, and residents in nearby Estreito and Aguiarnopolis have been warned against collecting water from the affected area. According to fire service reports, four bodies have been recovered, including that of a female truck driver and an 11-year-old girl. Additionally, one individual was rescued alive from the water shortly after the incident. The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, a significant infrastructure that has connected the two states since its construction in the 1960s, spans more than half a kilometre (about 1,600 feet) across the Tocantins river. As the rescue and environmental monitoring continue, the full impact of this disaster is yet to be determined.
