In brief

Spanish authorities reported the rescue of a newborn on a migrant dinghy, highlighting the risks faced by undocumented travelers seeking asylum in Europe. The birth occurred on Epiphany, a day celebrated in Spain with gift-giving, adding a bittersweet note to the challenging migrant journey.

A baby boy was born on a crowded migrant dinghy while making a treacherous journey from Africa to the Canary Islands, as reported by Spanish coast guards. The incident took place on Monday, coinciding with Spain's celebration of Epiphany, when children typically receive gifts. The vessel carrying the mother and numerous other migrants was initially detected off the coast of Lanzarote on January 6. Rescuers noted a pregnant woman on board but were astonished to find that the infant had arrived just minutes before they boarded the dinghy.According to Domingo Trujillo, the rescue operation’s captain, the mother was lying on the crowded inflatable raft while another passenger cradled the newborn. Following the successful rescue, the baby and his mother were transferred via helicopter to a hospital in Lanzarote for medical attention; fortunately, they did not encounter any complications. Álvaro Serrano Pérez, commander of the helicopter, expressed that “it being Three Kings Day, this was the best gift we could have received,” referring to the significance of the occasion. The journey from Africa to the Canary Islands is incredibly hazardous, with over 46,800 undocumented migrants making the perilous crossing last year, according to Spanish government data released earlier this month. The Epiphany, celebrated in Spain with traditions such as polishing shoes for the Three Kings—Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar—adds a cultural context to the circumstances surrounding the birth of the baby during this difficult endeavor.
