Vast Deadly Floods Devastate Nepalese Village: Mud and Silt Swamp

A catastrophic flash flood tore through the district of Betrawati, a village on the Nepal–Tibet border, leaving a scene of mud and silt that has erased homes and the lives of many residents. According to Nepal’s disaster agency, more than 1,000 souls have perished and nearly 4,000 people remain missing as rescue efforts stretch on, strained by the remote terrain and the sheer scale of the disaster.

BBC South Asia correspondent Azadeh Moshiri spoke to a local man whose wife was swept away in the torrent; he still waits for her body to be retrieved while the search and rescue teams continue to comb the flooded fields and riverbanks.

The floods illustrate the mounting vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather events, as climate change drives higher rainfall intensity and makes rapid response even more challenging.
