In brief
At least 13 people were killed and 39 injured when Ukrainian drones targeted Nizhnekamsk, a city in Russia’s Tatarstan with major oil refineries. The attack, lasting several hours overnight, was among the deadliest single incidents since Moscow’s full‑scale invasion. Russian authorities say industrial sites were hit, while Kyiv has increased long‑range strikes on facilities critical to Russia’s war effort. The strike underscores the growing use of drones by both sides and the mounting civilian casualties in the conflict.
Impact on Ukraine–Russia Conflict
At least 13 people were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian republic of Tatarstan, authorities confirmed on Tuesday. One child and 39 others were also injured, making it one of the deadliest single incidents since Moscow’s full‑scale invasion began.
The strike hit the city of Nizhnekamsk, more than 1,100 km from the Ukrainian border and home to several major oil refineries and a large petrochemical plant. The attack lasted several hours into the morning, with satellite imagery and local footage showing large plumes of smoke.
Russian officials say the industrial facilities were targeted, while Kyiv has stepped up long‑range strikes on facilities it claims feed Russia’s war economy. More than 450 Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defences that night.
The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, and Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev issued statements of condolence, and a period of mourning was declared across the republic.
Ukraine has intensified its use of drones to strike Russian logistical and energy infrastructure, with civilian casualties mounting. Russia, meanwhile, continues to launch large‑scale aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities.
