In brief
In a bold overnight operation, Ukraine struck deep within Russia, targeting the Engels airfield used by strategic bombers and a key oil refinery in Saratov. The attack, which caused significant damage, reportedly killed eight Russians and was followed by Russia’s counter‑attacks on Ukrainian ports and a Wildberries warehouse. Moscow said 635 drones were intercepted and documented the loss of two civilians in an unrelated drone strike. Both sides continue to intensify attacks on energy infrastructure, war‑related logistics, and key civilian sites as front‑line movement remains stagnant.
Ukraine Hits Russian Oil Refinery and Strategic Airfield
Ukrainian forces conducted overnight strikes deep inside Russia’s Saratov region, targeting the Engels airfield and a major oil refinery that they say finances Moscow’s war effort. The operation, which triggered a blaze at the airfield, was described by President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of “our long‑range sanctions” against Russian facilities.
Russian officials reported that eight people were killed in the strikes and that 635 drones were shot down or intercepted in the process. They also noted an additional strike on a Wildberries warehouse, Russia’s largest online retailer, and a loss of several civilians in other drone attacks across Udmurtia and Belgorod.
In response, Moscow said its forces attacked two Ukrainian ports and two vessels in the Black Sea overnight. A Ukrainian postal terminal near Kharkiv also suffered a strike that killed one person, according to Ukrainian sources.
Both sides have intensified targeting of major cities, energy facilities, and logistics hubs as the front line remains largely static, with US‑led mediation efforts still stalled. The full‑scale Russian invasion, launched in February 2022, continues to shape the cyber‑physical and humanitarian landscape of the region.
