Ugandans are mourning the death of 27‑year‑old David Owori, one of the country’s most celebrated footballers, after he was beaten to death by suspected robbers outside his home in Kampala’s Makindye neighbourhood.

Police confirmed that Owori was attacked with paving stones when he tried to resist a robbery of his mobile phone and other belongings. He was rushed to a local clinic and then to a private hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

SC Villa said: “We have lost more than a player – we have lost a leader, brother and friend.”

“The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life‑threatening injuries” – Asan Kasingye, club spokesperson.

Rachael Kawala, a police spokesperson, stated that detectives are following leads and that evidence from the scene has been collected and preserved. The murder has triggered widespread anger across the country, with fans, teammates and politicians demanding justice.

Parliament observed a minute’s silence on Wednesday and urged a swift investigation.

The Ugandan Football Association (Fufa) described Owori as “a true leader on and off the pitch” and the national side, the Cranes, said the team had lost a star who carried the hopes of Uganda. He had been a key player in SC Villa’s historic 2024 league title.

Owori’s death has ignited social‑media outrage and sparked questions about the escalating violent crime rates in Kampala, adding to the profile of a nation already set to continue its fight against gang‑related violence.

He was recently returning from a two‑year stint in Europe and had a contract until January 2027, making his untimely death a devastating loss for the club and the national team.
