In brief

Sri Lankan police have detained three locals over potential threats targeting Israeli tourists, prompting increased security measures in popular tourist areas.

The police in Sri Lanka have apprehended three individuals amid rising concerns for the safety of tourists, particularly visitors from Israel. According to officials, these Sri Lankans are currently undergoing interrogation as part of an ongoing investigation led by authorities. Government spokesperson Vijitha Herath indicated during a news conference that further legal action will be determined based on the outcomes of the inquiry. The arrests were initiated following urgent travel warnings issued by both the U.S. Embassy and Israel’s National Security Council, advising citizens to steer clear of Arugam Bay—a well-known surf hotspot. The American Embassy reported having received credible intelligence suggesting the possibility of an attack targeting popular locations in the area, prompting immediate travel restrictions for its staff. In a parallel move, Israel also urged its nationals to evacuate Arugam Bay and southern coastal regions of Sri Lanka, further advising against displaying any Israeli symbols or congregating in groups. This was in light of fears that such assumptions might attract unwanted attention. The United Kingdom followed suit by updating its travel advisory for Sri Lanka, highlighting an amplified risk of terrorism. The warning specified that attacks could be indiscriminate, potentially targeting locales frequented by tourists like hotels and places of worship. In proactive measures, Sri Lankan police have bolstered security in Colombo and other tourist-centric locales such as Ella and Weligama, following reports that some visitors had established temporary prayer spaces due to ongoing Jewish holidays. Authorities have expressed their commitment to ensuring the safety of tourists during this unsettling period.
