Authorities have successfully identified all 116 individuals injured in a tragic bar fire at a Swiss ski resort on New Year's Eve. The fire erupted at a popular venue in Crans-Montana, resulting in the deaths of 40 people, aged between 14 and 39 years.
While the deceased individuals had been previously identified, officials worked diligently to ascertain the identities of the injured, many of whom are still receiving treatment in hospital. As of the latest update, 83 individuals remain hospitalized, and among the injured are at least 12 different nationalities.
Most injuries were severe burns, and in some instances, this has delayed identification due to the extent of the injuries.
Originally, investigators reported 119 injuries, but that figure has now been adjusted. In light of the incident, a criminal investigation has been initiated regarding the French couple who managed the bar, Le Constellation. Preliminary findings suggest that the ignition of sparklers on bottles carried too closely to the ceiling may have triggered the fire.
Beatrice Pilloud, the lead prosecutor from Valais canton, indicated that investigators are examining whether the acoustic foam used on the bar's ceiling contributed to the fire's severity and whether it conformed to safety regulations.
Details about some of the victims have begun to emerge, including Charlotte Niddam, a 15-year-old student believed to have lost her life, with her family mourning her tragic departure.
The grieving parent of Arthur Brodard, 16, confirmed that he was also among the victims, expressing hope that he is now at peace. Additionally, Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old junior golfer from Italy, was identified as another victim, with tributes pouring in from the Italian Golf Federation.
