OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Former All-Pro NFL running back Doug Martin died after a struggle with police officers who were taking him into custody while they were investigating a break-in at a home in Oakland, police said Monday.
Martin, best known for his stellar career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, became unresponsive after being arrested early Saturday, according to a statement released by the Oakland Police Department.
He was transported by paramedics to a hospital where he later died, police reported. He was just 36 years old. A cause of death has yet to be determined, and an autopsy will be conducted, the Alameda County Coroner’s Office confirmed.
According to police, Martin was involved in a break-in and a brief struggle ensued as police attempted to detain him. The department has not released further details regarding the incident.
Originally from Oakland, Martin had lived in Stockton, where he made a name for himself on the high school football field.
His former agent, Brian Murphy, shared a statement from Martin's family, revealing that he had privately battled mental health challenges that had significantly affected his personal and professional life. Murphy mentioned that Martin's parents had sought medical help for him and contacted local authorities when he felt overwhelmed and disoriented.
Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run, Murphy said.
This tragic incident has triggered an investigation involving police, Oakland’s mayor and other authorities as they reach out to Martin’s family during this difficult time. Mayor Barbara Lee expressed condolences, stating, We mourn the loss of Doug Martin, an Oaklander who had a distinguished NFL career and tragically passed away Saturday morning. Our condolences are with his family and loved ones.
Martin’s football career is remembered for its achievements; he was the 31st overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft after an impressive season at Boise State. He rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns in his rookie season and earned a Pro Bowl selection. Martin's legacy includes 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns over six seasons with the Buccaneers and one with the Raiders.
In a statement, the Buccaneers expressed their sorrow, stating: We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.
Martin was honored as one of the top 50 players in Buccaneers history during the team's 50th anniversary celebrations.
As investigations continue, his story highlights the urgent need to address mental health challenges faced by athletes.
