Two people were killed in a Russian drone attack on a home in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, local authorities report. The incident included injuries to two children, aged 11 and 15, and took place on the eve of new talks between Ukrainian and American negotiators in the US.
Negotiations to end the ongoing war in Ukraine have been stagnant since the onset of the recent conflict in Iran. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a desire for US negotiators to address the US decision to ease sanctions on Russian oil, actions taken by Washington to maintain global energy prices.
Despite ongoing talks mediated by the US, combat continues unabated in Ukraine, with little hope of changing Russia's demands. On the agenda for the discussions are plans for another trilateral meeting with Russia and efforts to mend the complicated relationship between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, who has claimed that Zelensky is a major roadblock to peace.
Ukraine has also offered its expertise in drone technology to the US, which could enhance its capabilities against Iranian threats. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Zaporizhzhia has been a frequent target of Russian aggression.
The city is part of four southeastern regions that Russia has attempted to annex, without fully controlling any of them. Speaking to the BBC, President Zelensky noted that the war in the Middle East, spurred by US and Israeli strikes on Iran, has drained Ukraine's missile supplies.
Zelensky asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is aiming for a prolonged conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which would divert resources away from Ukraine. The recent US decision to relax sanctions on Russian oil has raised alarms in Ukraine, signaling a possible shift in the West's stance towards Russia amidst the ongoing conflict.
