Thai police in Pattaya confirmed that 17‑year‑old Tunchanok Donhomla died from suffocation inside a suitcase.
The body was found near a railway track on 27 June, just 15 minutes after 45‑year‑old Australian Simon Peter Carman was arrested for allegedly attempting to flee the country.
Investigation revealed DNA on the victim matched Carman, indicating he placed the body in the suitcase before dumping it. Police have brought four charges: murder, body concealment, kidnapping of a minor, and the taking of a minor for an indecent act.
Chief Anek Srathongyoo said the autopsy showed suffocation as the primary cause of death, with “some brain injury” occurring after death, possibly due to the suspect’s handling of the body.
Carman repeatedly denied the charges and claimed self‑defence. In a video while in custody, he told the victim’s family that he was “unfortunately out of control,” urging other girls to be careful.
Tunchanok, also known as “Cake,” had travelled to Pattaya with a friend on 16 June for a holiday. She was an only child living with her father and step‑mother in Kalasin, north‑east of Pattaya.
Her father, Thongchai Donhomla, expressed deep sorrow, saying, “My daughter had no mother, so whenever she wanted anything, she would find a way herself.” His step‑mother, Oradee Bussarakum, voiced anger, stating, “I want them (Carman) executed.”
If convicted, Carman faces Thailand’s maximum penalty – the death sentence. Police plan to submit the case to prosecutors by Friday, with a deadline for indictment set on 18 September.
