A violent tornado tore through the city of Marsala and the nearby town of Petrosino on Friday, sending a plume of debris and destructive winds across the Sicilian coastline.

The twister caused significant structural damage, flipping cars and breaching the walls of several buildings. Two people were injured by the wind gusts, and local authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage and providing medical assistance to the wounded.

Thunderstorms that moved across the island late that day spawned the tornado and intensified the damage. Although winds have calmed in most parts of Sicily, weather forecasts warn that more severe weather could affect the central Mediterranean, prompting residents to remain vigilant.
