In brief

A recent earthquake has prompted concerns over the limited communication capabilities within Myanmar due to intense internet censorship imposed by the ruling military junta.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on Friday has resulted in widespread devastation, but the information flow about the disaster has been distorted by severe internet censorship enforced by the military government since their coup in 2021. While neighboring Thailand has readily shared footage and updates regarding the quake's impact, Myanmar remains cloaked in silence due to restricted access to social media and the internet. The junta's control over telecommunication infrastructures has resulted in significant communication blackouts, particularly in areas opposing military rule. As power outages become widespread following the quake, accessing reliable information becomes increasingly challenging, thus impeding essential aid and recovery efforts. Strikingly, even government websites experienced outages, further complicating the situation as the ruling authorities struggled to provide updates.Joe Freeman, a researcher from Amnesty International, highlights the disparity in information dissemination, stating, “Compare the coverage of the earthquake in Thailand, where tremors and damage have been extensively reported, to Myanmar, where we still don’t have a clear picture of the extent of the damage and loss and may not for some time.” The stark contrast in information visibility echoes the open communications landscape prior to the coup, which was marked by an abundance of social media activity, memes, and vibrant public discourse during previous crises. In regions involving armed conflict against military rule, connectivity issues exacerbate the challenges. Some residents have turned to satellite-based services like Starlink to maintain an online presence, but for many, the ability to share their experiences or gather information remains heavily curtailed. As details continue to emerge from this disaster, the implications of Myanmar's internet censorship cast a long shadow on the nation's ability to respond to crises efficiently and transparently.
