Philly Masked Man Chases Residents: Police Seek Witnesses and Suspect
A Melbourne‑style doll mask has become the latest source of dread in Philadelphia, where the police are combing the city for a suspect who allegedly chased several residents near City Hall last week. Surveillance footage shows the man wearing a frightening face mask engaged in a threatening encounter with a woman on a morning run on 12 August. He is recorded asking her, “ready to die?” and then holding an arm behind his back as he pursued her, creating a freakish spectacle captured on her cellphone camera. The victim was forced to stumble and slipped, causing a minor fall.
Afterward the masked individual fled into an underground rail station, apparently leaving the scene before the police could intervene. Authorities believe the incident may have been an attempt to create a viral stunt, but the exact motive remains unclear.
Police have released photographs and a video of the suspect to the public to aid in the identification process. Chief Captain Jason Smith told CBS the suspect was filmed with a cellphone whose light was on, casting a stark, eerie glow on the mask. The videos were shared in a breath‑taking attempt by city officials to seek witnesses from the public.
The suspect is facing charges that include terroristic threats, simple assault, and other offences.
“It looks like a twisted game,” said employee Luanda Marinho, who reported encountering the masked man while meeting a friend for a morning run. “He repeatedly asked, ‘Do you want to race me? I bet I’m faster than you.’ None of us responded, which was unsettling.”
Operators say the city will keep monitoring the situation closely, and residents are advised to remain cautious, especially when running or walking in public spaces. The Philadelphia Police have urged anyone who saw the suspect or who any other details that may help bring this individual to justice to contact the department immediately.
