HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder, terrorism, arson, and several other charges stemming from an attack on the Pennsylvania governor's mansion. Cody Balmer, 38, orchestrated the attack on April 13, 2023, using beer bottles filled with gasoline as Molotov cocktails while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were inside the residence.

Reports indicate Balmer scaled an iron security fence and managed to evade police, resulting in significant property damage to the mansion, which is a state-owned building. Miraculously, no one was injured during the incident, although the governor and his family were forced to evacuate. The fire caused damage worth millions, affecting various items in the house.

During court proceedings, both prosecutors and Judge Deborah Curcillo described the evidence—including harrowing video footage of the attack—as horrific, highlighting the danger posed to those inside the residence at the time. Following the attack, Balmer confessed to police that he intended to confront Shapiro with violence, stating that he had planned to use a sledgehammer if given the chance.

The attack, occurring shortly after a Passover celebration, raised questions regarding Balmer's motivations, especially considering Shapiro's Jewish faith. However, Balmer later claimed in a letter to the Associated Press that the incident was not motivated by the governor's religion.

Balmer's mother mentioned that she had sought help for her son's mental health challenges before the attack. A defense attorney had indicated that Balmer's situation and mental health had been factors in the delayed court proceedings, suggesting a need for treatment prior to the assault.

As investigation efforts continue, it is noted that the mansion will undergo repairs and security enhancements to prevent such incidents in the future.
