Luigi Mangione Lawyers Meet Federal Prosecutors Over Possible Plea Deal

Attorney teams representing Luigi Mangione will hold a conference with federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York on Friday. The meeting comes amid media speculation that a plea agreement may be on the table. Mangione is accused of killing United Healthcare chief executive Brian Thompson in 2024 and faces federal stalking charges that could lead to life imprisonment without parole.

The federal plea discussion does not guarantee a final deal and any arrangement would still require court approval. At the same time, Mangione’s defenders have argued that a guilty plea on the federal level could trigger a double‑jeopardy claim, potentially barring a separate state prosecution for the same facts. New York’s constitution, like the U.S. Constitution, prohibits prosecution of the same offense twice.

While Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both federal and state cases, the federal trial is set for January 2027, with the state trial scheduled to begin on 8 September. The outcome of the Friday conference could therefore influence both proceedings. Respondents from the U.S. Attorney’s office, the state Department of Justice, and Mangione’s counsel have not yet commented on the meeting.
