The jailed ex-president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has undergone a successful surgery for a double hernia, according to his wife Michelle. The former leader, currently serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election, was transferred from a federal police headquarters to a hospital in Brasília for the procedure after receiving Supreme Court approval.

Before the surgery, Bolsonaro expressed his endorsement for his eldest son, Flávio, who is campaigning for the presidential candidacy in 2026. Flávio, a senator, revealed the endorsement from his father in a heartfelt announcement outside the hospital where Jair is being treated. In a handwritten letter, Jair stated, I hand over what is most important in the life of a father - my own son for the mission of rescuing our country, Brazil. This acknowledgment solidifies his son's political ambitions supported by the family's legacy.

Despite his challenges in prison and a guilty verdict related to coup-plotting, Bolsonaro continues to hold considerable sway in Brazilian politics. His endorsement of Flávio indicates a continuation of his political aspirations, even from behind bars. Meanwhile, the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has confirmed plans to run for re-election in 2026, setting the stage for another competitive political landscape in Brazil.

Jair Bolsonaro is anticipated to return to federal police custody once he receives medical clearance from his doctors following his recovery.
