LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — In a harrowing visual account, six images made public by federal investigators on Thursday exposed the final moments of UPS Flight 2976, which erupted into a fireball along a Kentucky airport runway on November 4. The sequence begins with the alarming sight of an engine detaching from the cargo plane during takeoff, followed by flames igniting and the blazing engine being propelled from the aircraft. The final images depict the plane engulfed in flames, trailing smoke as it took to the sky.
Tragically, mere moments after these images were captured, the plane crashed in a fireball explosion, resulting in the deaths of 14 people, including three crew members, and causing significant damage in the vicinity of Louisville’s airport.
These photos were obtained from airport surveillance cameras and were included in a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board. This incident bears a striking resemblance to the images captured before the 2000 crash of an Air France Concorde shortly after takeoff from Paris.
As the investigation progresses, initial findings suggested mechanical failures—specifically, signs of cracks in the left wing’s engine mount. Alongside these images, the report contains detailed examinations of various aircraft components as investigators work to uncover the causes behind this tragic event.
