A 14‑year‑old pupil was arrested after a shooting at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille.

The incident occurred Monday morning when the student entered the school carrying a firearm and fired shots that wounded a principal and a teacher.

Police say the two staff members suffered non‑life‑threatening injuries – the principal was hit in the leg and the teacher in the thigh – but both received treatment.

Authorities confirmed that no other students were harmed, because the school was secured and pupils were escorted to safety within minutes.

Education Minister Edouard Geffray posted that the attack was not related to the protests that have been taking place over school conditions, and that the suspected pupil is believed to have fired the shots.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez visited the site later that day to assess the situation and reassure parents and staff.

Aubagne Mayor Jean‑Pierre Squillari said the student was restrained by a member of staff and detained immediately after the incident.
