In brief
The U.S. wind power industry faces significant challenges after President Trump's order halting all federal approvals for new projects.
In an unexpected move that has sent shockwaves through the renewable energy sector, President Trump signed an executive order on January 21, 2025, effectively stalling the growth of wind energy in the United States. This comprehensive directive suspends federal approvals for new wind farms, including those planned for both land and offshore installations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The order mandates a temporary cessation of all leasing activities on federal lands and waters for wind projects while a government review is conducted. Additionally, federal agencies have been instructed to pause the issuance of permits necessary for wind farms, impacting even those located on private property requiring federal environmental clearances. Though construction on already approved projects may continue, the order raises concerns as it encourages the U.S. Attorney General and the Secretary of the Interior to consider altering or revoking existing leases. This could create significant obstacles for many projects that have already received the green light. The repercussions of this directive are poised to be far-reaching, particularly for the wind energy industry, which currently contributes approximately 10% of the nation's electricity and plays a vital role in many Republican-led states such as Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas. Presently, there are over 40 gigawatts of wind projects in the pipeline, enough to power tens of millions of homes, spread across the Atlantic and states like Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota.Previously, the Biden administration had granted permits for 11 commercial-scale wind farms along the Atlantic Coast, out of which five are currently under construction and one has already been completed. However, with this new order, the aspirations of Eastern states like New York and Massachusetts to expand offshore wind projects in pursuit of renewable energy targets now hang in the balance.
