VERO BEACH, Fla. — A gunman who fatally shot a deputy during an eviction attempt in Florida has died from injuries sustained in the confrontation, according to officials.

Michael Halberstam, 37, opened fire on two deputies and a locksmith on Friday as they tried to serve an eviction notice at his mother’s home. During the exchange of gunfire, Halberstam was struck multiple times by returning shots and succumbed to his injuries Saturday afternoon.

Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, was killed in the incident, while another deputy is recovering from a shoulder injury. The locksmith is in critical condition after undergoing surgery but remains unidentified at this time.

Prior to the shooting, the sheriff’s office had received multiple calls regarding disturbances at the home, mostly made by Halberstam’s mother, which led to an unexpected confrontation when deputies arrived. “This was a standard call for service,” said Sheriff Eric Flowers, emphasizing that there was nothing in Halberstam’s record to suggest he would pose a significant threat.

Sweeting-Mashkow was posthumously promoted to sergeant, a testament to her dedicated service. Sheriff Flowers remarked, “I can tell you that our team will feel this forever,” highlighting the profound impact the loss will have on the department.
