FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Argentina
Following Argentina’s 1‑0 defeat to Spain, FIFA has launched a formal disciplinary inquiry targeting several Argentine players and staff for alleged assault and unsportsmanlike conduct.
The prosecutor identified individuals: Nahuel Molina (two assault counts, one unsportsmanlike charge), Leandro Paredes (three assault allegations), and assistant coach Roberto Ayala (one assault claim). The report also flags midfielder Thiago Almada and Spain’s Gavi for related breaches.
Under FIFA’s disciplinary code an assault can result in a minimum of three‑match ban while unsportsmanlike actions carry at least a one‑match suspension.
Beyond the final‑whistle episode, Argentina’s federation is also under scrutiny for a range of infractions spanning multiple fixtures. These include the use of a sporting event for political demonstration (the Falklands banner after a semi‑final win), discriminatory chants, lateness of kick‑offs, inappropriate displays from players and fans, as well as spectator behaviour that threatened security.
The banner displayed in the semi‑final celebrations read Las Malvinas son Argentinas, translating as The Falklands are Argentine. The incident, combined with the post‑match confrontations, has drawn FIFA’s attention.
The outcome of the investigations will determine whether players and coaching staff face suspensions, fines or additional sanctions, potentially affecting their participation in upcoming international fixtures.
