In brief

Reports reveal that gangs are seizing humanitarian aid intended for starving Gazans, exacerbating an already dire situation.

Amid the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the vacuum of governance left by Israel's military response to Hamas has led to a surge in organized crime. Looting incidents have intensified, with desperate gangs intercepting humanitarian aid convoys, stripping them of vital supplies meant for the local population. In a shocking incident last month, Hazem Isleem, a Palestinian truck driver, recounted being ambushed while transporting food aid. Armed thieves forced him to divert to a secluded area, where they looted his convoy's cargo, amounting to thousands of pounds of flour. Isleem described the encounter as terrifying, particularly lamenting the fact that he was unable to deliver essential food to those in need due to the pillaging that ensued. The humanitarian situation in the region has spiraled since the onset of the conflict following the Hamas-led attack on October 7, resulting in a staggering death toll exceeding 45,000, according to local health authorities. The ongoing Israeli bombardment has placed significant restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, creating a landscape of severe hunger exacerbated by a lack of coordinated aid delivery.Though Hamas has been effectively driven from many territories, Israel has not stepped in to establish a stable governing body. The absence of authority has facilitated the emergence of armed gangs in certain parts of southern Gaza, further complicating the delivery of aid. In response to this chaotic environment, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced a halt to aid deliveries through the main crossing point, Kerem Shalom, citing the deteriorating security conditions. As violence continues to escalate and aid becomes increasingly inaccessible, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, leaving countless individuals facing starvation and despair amidst the turmoil.
