A French court has for the first time recognised cosmic radiation as a factor in the breast cancer of a long‑serving flight attendant.

Sophie Lainault, 59, a former Air France stewardess, sought to have her cancer classified as an occupational disease. In Bayonne, the court confirmed that radiation from space, along with passive smoking and night‑shift work, were carcinogenic hazards linked to her profession.

The ruling means Lainault, who is now in remission, can take early retirement with all future treatment fully covered by France’s health system. It also sets a legal precedent for similar claims by other flight crews.

Cosmic radiation exposure is well known to increase at high altitudes, especially near the North Pole where the air crew would have flown. Although exposure for most travellers is considered statistically insignificant, the cumulative dose for frequent flyers is higher.

A Harvard Medical School study released this month found that flight attendants and pilots had the highest proportion of radiation‑related cancer deaths among more than 500 professions – 6.9% for attendants and 6.7% for pilots.

Professor Jim Smith of the University of Portsmouth noted that while it’s impossible to attribute an individual case to radiation, small additional doses could still modestly increase cancer risk for aircrew.

Lainault’s lawyer, Elisabeth Leroux, said France has recognised breast cancer risks for other professions, such as nurses, but it is the first time for an air‑hostess.

Air France stated it had not been involved in the legal case and reaffirmed that staff health and safety remains a top priority, offering medical support beyond regulatory requirements.
