(AP) — In the wake of a devastating explosion at a nearby explosives plant, the Maple Valley Baptist Church held a special Sunday service to honor the 16 victims and offer support to their families. Pastor Jimmy Andrews reflected the somber mood in the community, stating, “There’s a somber kind of vibe right now in the community just because it’s so many lives that have been affected by it.”
Many attendees had personal connections to the Accurate Energetic Systems plant, which is known for supplying and researching military explosives, making the tragedy hit even closer to home. Vigils and memorial services were organized across various local churches as residents sought solace and support, including an event attended by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.
On a helicopter survey of the destruction, Gov. Lee expressed his shock at the extent of the damage, commenting, “The losses are staggering.” Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the explosion while careful operations to manage remaining hazardous materials continue.
“Extraordinary precautions are in place to prevent further damage and injuries,” the Humphreys County sheriff’s office reported, reassuring the community that while the area is secured, some noise and smoke may still be present from controlled detonations.
Witnesses described feeling the impact of the blast over 20 miles away, leaving behind a scene of twisted metal and debris. The plant, situated in a heavily wooded area, remains a symbol of the tight-knit community it served.
Local residents like Brandon Brake, who also attended Maple Valley Baptist, expressed their determination to support each other through this challenging time, asserting, “We’re going to pull through.”
In a gesture of respect, the town of McEwen lowered flags to half-staff, and a candlelight vigil is set to take place outside the Humphreys County Courthouse. The community's schools have also pledged to provide counseling services to aid students coping with the impact of this tragedy.
The pastor encouraged congregants to be vigilant in looking after one another, weaving prayers into their community support efforts.
