NEW YORK (AP) — Two Major League Baseball pitchers from the Cleveland Guardians, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, were indicted on Sunday amidst allegations of their involvement in a bribery scheme aimed at sports bettors. The charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, honest services wire fraud, bribery, and money laundering, could lead to up to 20 years imprisonment upon conviction.

The investigation, which has been ongoing since unusual betting patterns during games where the players pitched were detected, saw Ortiz arrested at Boston Logan International Airport, with his court appearance scheduled for Monday.

In response to the allegations, Major League Baseball has stated their cooperation with federal authorities and continued the investigation into this troubling case. Both players have been on non-disciplinary paid leave since July, pending the outcome of the inquiry.

The Guardians organization has acknowledged the situation, offering full cooperation to both law enforcement and Major League Baseball as the investigations carry on.

Legal representation for Ortiz has opted not to comment, while Clase's attorney has not responded to inquiries regarding the charges.
