LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three individuals from California were sentenced for their involvement in a bizarre insurance fraud scheme that utilized a bear costume to damage luxury vehicles. The case, known as 'Operation Bear Claw,' revealed a plot where a person dressed as a bear staged fake attacks within a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes-Benz cars.
The California Insurance Department reported that the trio submitted false insurance claims seeking almost $142,000 in payouts, claiming that the bear had caused extensive damage inside the luxury vehicles.
Two men and a woman from the Los Angeles area pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud. They were sentenced to a weekend jail program followed by probation, and two of them were ordered to pay upwards of $50,000 in restitution to the insurance companies impacted.
Additionally, authorities are currently pursuing a fourth individual connected to the scam. Investigators noted that the group provided several videos allegedly showcasing a bear moving within the cars to support their damage claims. However, a California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist examined the footage and concluded that it was clearly a human person in a bear suit.
After executing a search warrant at their residence, detectives located the bear costume, which further implicated them in the scheme. The bizarre situation highlights the lengths to which some will go to commit fraud.
This unusual case follows a growing trend of bears invading residential areas in California, where they have been known to rummage through trash or even enter homes in search of food.
