In brief

On November 13, 2024, two explosions occurred near the Supreme Court of Brazil in Brasília, causing one fatality and prompting a security response as police investigate potential additional threats.

Two explosions near Brazil’s Supreme Court in the capital city of Brasília shocked the nation on Wednesday evening, resulting in at least one confirmed death. Occurring just 20 seconds apart at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time, the blasts struck within the vicinity of the Three Powers Plaza, a significant area housing key government offices.According to Celina Leão, vice governor of the Federal District, the first explosion originated from a car parked nearby, followed closely by the second blast in the plaza that flanks Brazil’s Congress and the Supreme Court. Fortunately, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was not present at the site during the incidents.Initial reports indicated that a suspect had attempted to breach the Supreme Court building but was unsuccessful prior to the explosions. Images captured from the scene revealed the grim presence of a casualty in the plaza, with firefighters confirming one death. However, recovery efforts were hampered as authorities expressed concern over the possibility of additional unexploded devices nearby. In response, military police and anti-bomb units have been deployed to secure the area and conduct thorough sweeps for any remaining threats. This incident marks a significant security event in Brazil's capital, and updates are forthcoming as investigators piece together the details surrounding the explosions.
