President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of U.S. troops to 'war ravaged' Portland, Oregon, authorizing use of 'full force' if needed.
I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary troops to protect war ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE facilities under siege from attack by Antifa and other domestic terrorists, Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.
This announcement marks a further expansion of troop deployment in American cities amid a broader crackdown by the Trump administration on illegal immigration.
Portland's Democratic lawmakers had previously objected to Trump's plans. Mayor Keith Wilson stated earlier this month that he has not requested federal intervention.
The city's ICE facility has been the target of protests, sometimes resulting in violent clashes injuring federal agents.
Trump's announcement does not clarify whether he intends to activate the National Guard or regular U.S. military forces.
On Thursday, Trump hinted at a military operation in Portland, stating, We're going to get out there and we're going to do a pretty big number on those people in Portland, referring to perceived 'professional agitators and anarchists.' He described the situation in Portland as 'like living in hell' and mentioned the possibility of sending in federal troops.
Earlier this week, Trump signed an order designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, a move met with criticism from Oregon lawmakers who have condemned both Trump's comments and the alleged actions of ICE agents.
Representative Suzanne Bonamici remarked, ICE has said they're targeting people for arrest and detainment who have committed crimes. That's what they told us. But that's not what we are seeing.
