In brief

The political landscape in the Philippines is shaken as President Marcos tackles assassination threats made by Vice President Duterte, who asserts her comments were misconstrued.

Political tensions have surged within the Philippines as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. responded to serious threats concerning his life made by Vice President Sara Duterte. This turmoil erupted when Duterte divulged in a virtual press conference her claim of having orchestrated an assassination plan against Marcos should any harm come to her.Marcos addressed the nation in a video message on Monday, expressing his alarm over the "deeply concerning" threats, stating, “There have been a slew of reckless profanities and threats, including plans to kill some of us.” Although not naming Duterte directly, he emphasized the seriousness of the situation, arguing that threats against a president reflect a dangerous precedent for ordinary citizens. He vowed that such "criminal intent should never be tolerated" and indicated that he would not passively accept this threat. This escalation in political drama led to increased security measures for Marcos and his associates, including his wife, Liza, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who is also related to him. Duterte later attempted to clarify her statements, claiming that her comments had been taken "maliciously out of logical context." In a swift response, the Philippine Department of Justice announced their intention to investigate Duterte's assertions further, with investigators set to deliver a subpoena giving her five days to explain her remarks. Jesse Andres, under secretary for the Justice Department, remarked that the "premeditated plot to assassinate the president as declared by the self-confessed mastermind will now face legal consequences." The fractured relationship between the president and vice president, stemming from once being a united front, raises significant concerns about the stability of their joint administration and security in the nation's political environment, calling for close attention from both citizens and political observers alike.
