In brief

In a Paris court, Audrey F shared the alarming timeline surrounding the beheading of Samuel Paty, exposing how misinformation and external influences spiraled into tragedy, ultimately leading to the attack by Abdoullakh Anzorov.

The former headteacher of a French school recounted a deeply troubling chronology of events that culminated in the beheading of Samuel Paty, a well-respected history and geography instructor, by a Chechen refugee. During her testimony in Paris, Audrey F described her futile efforts to control a situation that spun out of control after a 13-year-old student deceived her parents about a classroom lesson. The incident began with a lesson on freedom of expression in October 2020 and transformed when the girl's father, who had not even attended the class, arrived at the headteacher's office accompanied by a local Islamist activist. "I didn't manage to protect him," Audrey F lamented, referring to her late colleague, emphasizing what a tremendous loss it represented. Tragically, the dispute culminated in Paty’s murder outside the school, carried out by 18-year-old Abdoullakh Anzorov, who was shot and killed by police shortly thereafter. The girl, now identified only by the initial Z for legal reasons, had received a two-day suspension for previous absences and disrespectful behavior but misled her parents into believing otherwise. She falsely accused Paty of targeting Muslim students during a lesson where he discussed three controversial cartoons from a French satirical magazine, claiming he had shown "naked" images of the Prophet Muhammad and instructed Muslim students to leave the classroom. However, Paty had given students the option to step out if they felt offended, emphasizing freedom of speech. In the wake of rising tensions, the girl's father, Brahim Chnina, along with Abdelhakim Sefrioui, showed up at the school demanding action against Paty, labeling him a "thug." Audrey F attempted to steer the conversation towards the girl’s school exclusion, but Sefrioui insisted on condemning Paty. The gruesome attack on Paty evoked memories of previous incidents of violence in France, notably the 2015 Charlie Hebdo massacre over similar cartoons. The court is currently hearing the cases against eight individuals, including Chnina and Sefrioui, who are facing charges for inciting violence and complicity in the murder. All have denied these charges but acknowledge their roles in stoking the pre-existing tensions.Reflecting on the situation, Audrey F admitted to sensing the schools’ atmosphere shift alarmingly in the following days. Social media posts fueled the tensions, and though the school sought police intervention, it ultimately could not prevent the tragic outcome. Threatening emails and phone calls ensued, and authorities provided a police presence outside the school. By the end of a school term, on October 16, Paty was brutally attacked outside his workplace. The allegations against Brahim Chnina's daughter have since resulted in her conviction for spreading false claims. Meanwhile, other teenagers involved in the events have been found guilty of offenses connected to preparing for violence. When questioned about the potential responses of Chnina and Sefrioui that could have diffused the situation, Audrey F stated the escalation could have been avoided had they not propagated their narratives online. Regret lingered as she expressed her struggle with feelings of inadequacy for not being able to protect her colleague, stating, “I tell myself that if there is justice, perhaps I’ll manage to move on.”
