In brief

The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, raising tensions and humanitarian concerns as conflict continues to escalate.

The United States has exercised its veto power to block a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at establishing an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, marking the fourth time it has done so amid the ongoing conflict. While fourteen of the fifteen Council members supported the draft, which insisted on an end to the hostilities and urged the release of all remaining hostages, the US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, stated that the resolution failed to properly address the relationship between a ceasefire and hostage release. The resolution also condemned efforts to deprive Palestinians of essential resources, with warnings from the UN highlighting the dire survival conditions for Palestinians in northern Gaza, where supplies have been severely restricted for over a month. A recent UN report indicated a high risk of impending famine in the region, exacerbating the already critical humanitarian situation. In the wake of the US veto, representatives from other countries expressed their frustrations. China's ambassador questioned the apparent disregard for Palestinian lives, while France called attention to the violations of international humanitarian law. The UK emphasized the need to halt the violence and facilitate the release of hostages. Human Rights Watch criticized the US for enabling what it deemed acts of impunity by Israel, which has continually denied accusations of human rights violations during its military operations. The ongoing conflict was ignited by a surprise attack from Hamas on Israel, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. Reports indicate that over 43,920 people have died in Gaza since hostilities began, according to local health ministry data. As the humanitarian crisis deepens, the call for a ceasefire and international intervention remains urgent.
