17‑year‑old girl killed in Swedish school sword attack

Police have confirmed that a 17‑year‑old student was fatally wounded when a former pupil wielded a sword at Brinell School in Fagersta on Friday afternoon. Two other pupils – a 12‑year‑old and a 17‑year‑old – were seriously injured, while a third person sustained only minor wounds.

The assault, investigated as both murder and attempted murder, involved an unnamed 18‑year‑old suspect who was arrested shortly after. Police fired shots at the scene, though it remains unclear if the suspect was hit before being detained.

The incident occurred just after the summer recess, as students had returned to class. A state of emergency was declared in the region, which was lifted by Saturday. Brinell School hosts just under 500 pupils and is located about 170 km (105 miles) northwest of Stockholm.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the makeshift memorial at the school, laying flowers for the victims. King Carl XVI Gustaf also expressed dismay and sadness in an official statement.

Investigators have conducted house searches linked to the suspect, and authorities continue to probe the motive behind the violent act.
