A 17‑year‑old female student was fatally stabbed in a sudden sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta, central Sweden, the following Friday afternoon.
Police report that a 12‑year‑old boy and a 17‑year‑old boy were seriously wounded, while a third person sustained minor injuries. The incident has been classified as a murder and attempted murder, prompting the arrest of an 18‑year‑old suspect who was not named publicly. Authorities say shots were fired on the scene, though it is unclear if the attacker was hit before detention.
Earlier this week, the region declared a temporary state of emergency, which was lifted by Saturday. The school, with under 500 students, lies 170 km northwest of Stockholm. Both police and local fire services performed two house searches linked to the suspect.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident as a “serious incident” on X, stating that police are working “very intensively”. King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed “dismay and sadness” upon hearing the news. Opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the making of a memorial with flowers at the school site.
