In brief

American Airlines faced temporary disruptions on Christmas Eve after encountering a technical issue that halted its flights for nearly an hour. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the airline's operations resumed just before 13:00 GMT.

The incident occurred during one of the busiest travel days of the year, prompting the airline to take quick action. In their statement, American Airlines attributed the disruption to a "vendor technology issue," emphasizing that their team was fully engaged in minimizing the impact on travelers. “We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience this morning. It's all hands on deck as our team is working diligently to get customers where they need to go as quickly as possible,” the airline communicated. Although flights began taking off again at several major hubs, passengers continued to experience delays of up to two hours due to the residual effects of the outage. Social media platforms filled with reports from affected travelers, some stuck on planes or at gates for a concerning amount of time. For instance, a gate agent in Fort Lauderdale announced that progress was being made as systems began to recover. This is not the first instance of flight disruptions for American Airlines. In July, the airline, along with other major U.S. carriers, faced a widespread grounding of flights due to communication setbacks resulting from a global IT crash linked to a problematic software update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike. The recent hiccup just before Christmas urges passengers to remain vigilant as the travel season continues, highlighting the importance of robust technology systems in the aviation industry.
