In brief

Comcast plans to spin off its NBCUniversal cable television networks, which consist of channels such as MSNBC and CNBC, in a strategic move to adapt to the streaming landscape while retaining its broadcast and streaming assets.

Comcast, the leading US telecommunications conglomerate, is poised to announce a significant pivot by spinning off its NBCUniversal cable television division in response to the shifting dynamics of the media landscape dominated by streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime. According to sources familiar with the matter, the new entity will encompass several well-known cable networks, including MSNBC, CNBC, USA, E!, Syfy, and the Golf Channel.Despite the growing popularity of streaming services, these networks remain profitable, collectively generating approximately $7 billion in revenue for the fiscal year ending September. Comcast plans to retain control of the NBC broadcast network, its film and television production studios, and its theme parks, along with the Peacock streaming platform. Mark Lazarus, who currently serves as the chairman of NBCUniversal's media group, is expected to take on the role of chief executive for the newly formed company. Comcast’s officials anticipate the separation will be completed within a year, a move they believe will position the company more favorably for future growth in the changing media market.Comcast's decision follows an industry trend, with several other media corporations, including Warner Bros and Paramount Global, having also downgraded the valuation of their cable networks in recent months. Meanwhile, although Walt Disney contemplated spinning off its cable networks, it ultimately decided against proceeding with such plans. As the first major media company to execute this kind of divestiture, Comcast is navigating its path amid a landscape of evolving viewer habits and competitive pressures from streaming services.
