In brief

Over 1,000 casualties reported as rescue operations continue amidst challenging communication conditions in the historically tumultuous region.

The earth shook violently beneath central Myanmar on Friday, as a magnitude-7.7 earthquake rattled a region already grappling with numerous hardships. The earthquake's epicenter was situated just 16km (10 miles) north-west of Sagaing, near the populous city of Mandalay, which has around 1.5 million residents and is located approximately 100km (62 miles) from the capital, Nay Pyi Taw.The initial quake struck at approximately 12:50 local time (06:20 GMT), followed by a significant aftershock measured at 6.4, occurring just 12 minutes later. Following the seismic disturbances, numerous reports began to emerge about the extent of the damage, including buckled roads and structural collapses throughout the country. The tremors were felt beyond Myanmar's borders, with reports indicating strong vibrations in Thailand and south-west China. As rescue efforts continue, the military has reported over 1,000 deaths, primarily in Mandalay—a region closest to the earthquake's epicenter. Full casualty figures remain uncertain, with 2,376 individuals injured and around 30 reported missing. Rescue teams are diligently working to locate survivors, including approximately 100 construction workers who are unaccounted for after a high-rise building collapsed in Bangkok, far from the quake's epicenter. As teams sift through the rubble in Thailand, they believe at least 15 individuals may be trapped alive, buried beneath substantial debris.Communication has posed a significant challenge for reporting accurate information in Myanmar, where a military junta has wielded control since a coup in 2021. The regime has stringent oversight on media outlets and limits internet access. Consequently, many areas affected by the quake have experienced disrupted communication networks, complicating rescue and reporting efforts. The tremor, officially classified as a major earthquake, struck at a relatively shallow depth of approximately 10 km, contributing to the severe damage reported across regions. For context, such magnitude earthquakes inflict disproportionate levels of devastation on structures and communities compared to deeper quakes. The situation has raised concerns for travel in the region, prompting advisories from the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) as aftershocks continue to pose risks. The FCDO has previously warned against all non-essential travel to parts of Myanmar and limited travel to certain areas of Thailand and Laos.As the global community reacts to this disaster, Myanmar's continued struggles—including ongoing conflict and humanitarian crises—compound the challenges of recovery and support for the affected regions. The aftermath of this devastating earthquake will undoubtedly put additional pressure on a nation already teetering on the edge of turmoil.
