Gunfire Erupts in Toronto Pub, Leaving Twelve Injured
Multiple suspects remain at large after a late-night shooting in a Scarborough pub sent a dozen individuals to the hospital with injuries.
In a troubling incident that has rattled the community, twelve people were injured in a shooting at a pub in Toronto on Friday night. Police revealed that the shooting occurred around 10:39 PM local time, in the Scarborough city center area of eastern Toronto.
The attack, executed by three men armed with an assault rifle and handguns, resulted in six people suffering bullet wounds, while others were injured by shards of glass from the rapid gunfire. Fortunately, authorities have confirmed that the injuries sustained are not life-threatening.
Police Superintendent Paul MacIntyre stated that the motive for the shooting is still unclear, as officers are pursuing all possible leads. “This was a brazen and reckless act of violence that’s really shaken our community and the city itself,” MacIntyre shared. An eyewitness account described the chilling moment when the assailants opened fire indiscriminately into the crowd.
In the wake of this mass shooting, Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her profound distress over the incident, emphasizing the troubling nature of the event due to the high number of casualties. She noted that local police have been working tirelessly throughout the night and into the following day to gather information and track down the suspects.
Premier Doug Ford of Ontario condemned the violence as well, affirming his full support for the Toronto Police Service in their ongoing search. As investigations continue, the local police force has deployed all available resources to catch the remaining suspects, one of whom was reported to have fled the scene in a silver vehicle, wearing a black balaclava.
Comparatively, the number of injuries in this incident is unusually high for shootings within the area. In 2023, eight people were injured and two fatalities were reported in similar incidents. While gun violence remains a pressing issue, data from 2021 indicates that Canada has a significantly lower homicide rate due to firearms than the United States.
Many residents in Toronto, a city with a population of approximately three million, are now reflecting on their safety, given that the total number of shooting-related deaths reached 43 last year.
