Capturing the Lives of India's Labourers: A Student Project in Tamil Nadu
Students shine a light on their community's struggles through photography.
Through the lens of 40 eager students in Tamil Nadu, a remarkable project titled "The Unseen Perspective" has brought into focus the life stories of India's laborers, often overlooked in society. These young photographers, aged 13 to 17, have documented the daily challenges faced by their parents and neighbors, offering an intimate glimpse into their world.
Among the poignant subjects is Rashmitha T, who captured the toil of a local beedi roller. With the photograph of an elderly woman laboring over a basket filled with tobacco, Rashmitha remarked, "Their untold stories need to be told." The images reflect the harsh realities these workers face, especially in the tobacco industry, where exposure poses severe health risks.
In Erode district, Jayaraj S focused on his mother, Pazhaniammal, who endures the relentless grind of brick-making. Capturing her in the early hours, he revealed the physical pain she suffers from long hours of work. “My mother frequently complains of headaches and body aches,” he shared, emphasizing the often invisible burdens carried by laborers.
Gopika Lakshmi M turned her camera on her father, Muthukrishnan, who continues to earn a living selling groceries despite undergoing dialysis treatment. "We don't have the luxury of resting," she mentioned, highlighting the resilience of families who prioritize work over health.
Keerthi illustrated her mother's struggle as the family's primary breadwinner, managing a local shop while her father is unwell. By documenting her mother’s efforts from dawn till late at night, Keerthi hopes to shed light on the sacrifices made for family welfare.
Meanwhile, Mukesh K documented his father's relentless quarry work, showcasing the grueling conditions under which laborers operate. His father's experiences reveal profound sacrifices, such as sleeping on cardboard to save costs.
These efforts by the students are part of a broader initiative by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department aimed at instilling social responsibility among youth. Muthamizh Kalaivizhi, the head of the program, observed that understanding laborers' lives is essential for fostering social change. The students' project serves not only as a documentation of hardship but as a call for recognition of the essential labor that sustains their communities.
