New Actor Takes on Iconic Role as "Malcolm in the Middle" Returns
The beloved sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle" is making a comeback with a fresh face playing Dewey, as original actor Erik Per Sullivan steps back from the spotlight.
The beloved US sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle" is set for a revival, returning with a four-episode special on Disney+. However, long-time fans will notice a significant change: Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, Malcolm's younger brother for seven seasons, will not be reprising his role. Instead, actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, known for his work in "Fargo," will step into the character's shoes.
Frankie Muniz is confirmed to return as the titular character Malcolm, joined by his on-screen parents—played by Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston. Kaczmarek commented on Sullivan's absence, noting that he has moved on from acting, stating, "He wasn’t interested in acting, at all." Utilizing his childhood fame, Sullivan has taken a different route, now a 33-year-old studying Victorian literature at a prestigious university, with a focus on classic authors like Charles Dickens.
During his time on "Malcolm in the Middle," which ran from 2000 to 2006, Sullivan's character Dewey was a central figure, often targeted by his brothers' antics but later evolved in the show's narrative. The show, which earned seven Emmy Awards, followed the quirky, working-class family led by Malcolm, a child prodigy navigating his chaotic home life.
Plans for the revival are underway, with filming scheduled to commence in Vancouver shortly. The first episode's synopsis reveals Malcolm now has a teenage daughter, portrayed by Keeley Karsten, who will find herself entangled in family drama during Hal and Lois’s 40th wedding anniversary celebration.
The original cast members, Christopher Masterson as Francis and Justin Berfield as Reese, will also make their triumphant return. Additionally, Kiana Madeira is set to join the ensemble as Malcolm's girlfriend, while Riverdale's Anthony Timpano will play their youngest sibling, Jamie, and Vaughan Murrae will portray Kelly. With the excitement building for the return of this modern classic, fans are eager to see how the show's dynamics will evolve with the new cast configuration.
