Tristan Tate Under Investigation for Alleged Election Interference in Romania
Romanian authorities investigate Tristan Tate's potential violation of election laws through social media content during presidential elections.
Romanian authorities have begun investigating Tristan Tate, a British-American social media influencer, over allegations he violated election laws during the country's recent presidential elections by publishing politically focused content. Police sources confirm that the investigation revolves around a post shared by Tate on election day, which purportedly contained explicit or implicit political messaging, deemed illegal in Romania.
The 36-year-old influencer, who is the younger sibling of Andrew Tate—another controversial figure known for his misogynistic views—has a substantial online following, with their collective reach exceeding 13 million. While they are currently under investigation for separate serious allegations, including human trafficking, this latest inquiry was prompted by a formal complaint received by Ilfov county police.
The allegations specify that Tate's social media activities could have swayed voter opinion, potentially breaching laws against foreign election interference and campaign activities during prohibited timeframes. He is scheduled for questioning on Tuesday, with authorities clarifying that Andrew Tate is not implicated in this particular probe.
Although the Tate brothers have garnered significant criticism due to their contentious remarks regarding women, Tristan Tate has yet to publicly address this latest investigation. In a video posted to X during the election, he claimed that he is "not campaigning," asserting that as an American using an American social media platform from Dubai, he believes he is not bound by Romania's election laws.
Both brothers were arrested in December 2022, facing multiple charges, including human trafficking. While they vehemently deny these allegations, they spent several months under house arrest. More recently, new charges—including those involving minors—have emerged against them in Romania, alongside 21 charges pending in the UK, where they are accused of serious crimes including rape and human trafficking.
Despite facing legal troubles in both nations, the brothers traveled to Florida earlier this year after a Romanian court lifted a travel ban, returning to Romania shortly after and asserting their innocence to the press.
