A light aircraft linked to a medical charity crashes in Nairobi, resulting in six fatalities.
Six individuals died following the crash of a small medical plane belonging to Amref Flying Doctors in Nairobi, Kenya's capital, on Thursday afternoon. The Cessna aircraft had just departed from Wilson Airport en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, when it crashed into a residential area in Githurai, igniting a fire.
Henry Wafula, the Kiambu County Commissioner, confirmed that four of the deceased were medical personnel including doctors and nurses, along with two individuals on the ground. Additionally, two others sustained severe injuries during the incident. Authorities are currently conducting investigations to determine the cause of the crash, which lost contact with air traffic control merely three minutes after takeoff, according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
Amref’s CEO, Stephen Gitau, stated that they are fully cooperating with aviation authorities and emergency responders to uncover the facts related to the crash. The Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service have also been deployed for recovery efforts at the crash site. Eyewitness Patricia Kombo described witnessing a loud bang and a red flash preceding the crash, followed by smoke and the sight of chaos as people fled the scene.
In a separate incident, a train collided with a bus at a railway crossing near Naivasha, central Kenya, resulting in at least four fatalities, as reported by a Red Cross worker. The bus, belonging to the Kenya Pipeline Company, was transporting staff after their morning shift, with all injured parties receiving hospital treatment.
