Leonard Lauder, Key Figure in Estée Lauder's Global Expansion, Dies at 92
Legendary businessman and philanthropist Leonard Lauder has passed away, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the cosmetics industry.
Leonard Lauder, the influential figure behind the global success of Estée Lauder Companies, has died at the age of 92. He passed away on Saturday surrounded by family, according to a statement from the company.
Lauder joined his parents' cosmetics company in 1958, rising through the ranks to become chief executive officer, a role he held for 17 years. His strategic leadership was instrumental in acquiring well-known brands such as Clinique, Bobbi Brown, and MAC, further solidifying Estée Lauder's position in the highly competitive beauty market.
Stephane de La Faverie, current CEO of Estée Lauder, remarked, “He was an icon and pioneer, earning respect worldwide. His energy and vision helped shape our company and will continue to do so for generations to come.” Lauder's net worth was estimated to be around $10.1 billion, as reported by Forbes in 2025.
Originally from New York, Lauder was the eldest son of the brand's founders, Estée and Joseph Lauder. He served in the United States Navy before dedicating himself to the family business, at a time when its annual sales were under $1 million—equivalent to approximately $11 million today. Under his guidance, the company expanded both in Europe and Asia, and he established its inaugural research and development laboratory.
Lauder played a significant role in taking the company public in 1995, with stock prices soaring 33% on its first day of trading. He transitioned out of the CEO role in 1999 but maintained his influence as chairman emeritus until his death.
Tributes have poured in from various quarters, with celebrities and business executives honoring Lauder's impactful legacy. Actress Elizabeth Hurley fondly remembered him on social media, calling him her “American Daddy” and expressing disbelief at a world without him. Former New York mayor and billionaire Mike Bloomberg noted the lasting nature of Lauder’s contributions, suggesting his influence would endure for generations.
In addition to his business achievements, Lauder was also a passionate art collector, having promised his billion-dollar Cubist collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He showed a strong commitment to social causes, serving as honorary chairman of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, advocating for cancer research and awareness throughout his life.
