Norway's Lottery Mix-Up Leaves Thousands Disillusioned
A coding glitch at Norsk Tipping led to erroneous lottery win notifications, leaving many hopeful players disappointed.
Last week, thousands of hopeful lottery participants in Norway experienced a surge of excitement only to face disillusionment shortly after. Norsk Tipping, the state-owned company responsible for managing lottery affairs, mistakenly notified players of inflated EuroJackpot winnings due to a coding error. The mix-up involved what Norsk Tipping described as a "manual error" in currency conversion, where amounts were accidentally multiplied by 100 instead of being divided.
Following the backlash from affected players, some of whom had begun planning vacations or home purchases, Norsk Tipping’s chief executive, Tonje Sagstuen, expressed profound regret for the "false hopes" created by the incorrect notifications. The company confirmed that the error was identified swiftly; however, the fallout was significant and damaging to player trust. Sagstuen, who later departed from her position, emphasized the urgency of restoring confidence in their services.
Sylvia Brustad, chairwoman of Norsk Tipping, acknowledged the breach of trust and committed to addressing the challenges brought to light by the incident. She stated that the organization would take decisive steps to improve its operations amidst mounting criticism from both the public and government officials.
Norsk Tipping oversaw notifications for the EuroJackpot draw, which boasted a collective prize pool of approximately $50 million last Friday. While specific details about the number of affected players or the amounts they were told they had won remain unclear, the organization faces scrutiny over its operational integrity in light of this error.
