Finding Hope Through Performance: Ukrainian Teens Take Center Stage Amidst Strife
A summer acting class in Ukraine offers young people, burdened by the ongoing war, a fleeting opportunity to express themselves and foster hope through theater.
In the heart of Kyiv, as the ongoing conflict has weighed heavily on the youth, an inspiring initiative surfaced: a summer acting class spearheaded by Olesia Korzhenevska. Her vision was clear — to create a space for young actors to explore the joys of creativity amid their trials. The class culminated in a performance of an original play named "It’s okay!", aiming to instill a sense of joy and hope.
It hasn’t been easy for the teenagers finding their way to this unique opportunity. The past years, marred by the pandemic and a persistent war with Russia, saw many isolating themselves in fear and uncertainty. The emotional scars were deep, making it hard for these adolescents to envision a life free from conflict. One notable student, 16-year-old Sasha Suchyk, came on board against all odds. Previously, he dropped out of acting due to a decline in his mental health, spending much of the last year in a mental hospital battling depression.
Despite these challenges, under Korzhenevska's guidance, students like Sasha found healing through their performances. They not only developed their acting skills but also tapped into their feelings, finding release and camaraderie. The transformative power of theater showcased that, even in tumultuous times, young people can forge connections and rediscover their aspirations.
The play’s rehearsals became a sanctuary for these teens, a momentary escape where laughter, emotion, and shared experiences intertwined. As the curtain rises, "It’s okay!" stands as a testament to resilience, mirroring the hope that bubbles just beneath the surface, a reminder that dreams can persist even amid adversity.
