Successful Rescue of Colombian Gold Miners After 18-Hour Ordeal

Colombian officials confirmed that all 18 miners, who had been trapped for approximately 18 hours due to an equipment malfunction, were rescued unharmed, reigniting concerns about illegal mining practices in the region.

Eighteen gold miners who found themselves trapped underground in a mine in northwestern Colombia have been successfully rescued after enduring nearly 18 hours of harrowing conditions. The Colombians became stranded on Thursday at the El Minón mine in Antioquia due to a mechanical failure, as reported by the AFP news agency.

A lengthy rescue operation was undertaken, lasting approximately 12 hours, and officials from Colombia's National Mining Agency (ANM) have confirmed that all workers are reported to be in good health post-rescue. The operation was completed just after 03:00 local time (09:00 BST) on Friday, much to the relief of their anxious families and colleagues.

Video footage captured the emotional moment as miners emerged from the depths of the mine, greeted by cheers and applause from their fellow workers who had been anxiously awaiting their safe return. According to Yarley Erasmo Marin, a representative from a local miners’ association, the incident resulted from a mechanical failure that caused the collapse of a structure intended to prevent landslides, obstructing the primary exit from the mine.

As the miners waited for rescue, emergency responders had to supply them with oxygen through hoses to ensure their well-being. In light of the incident, the ANM has issued a statement urging the mining community to refrain from engaging in illegal mining activities, which pose significant threats to the safety of workers and negatively impact Colombia's natural resources.
