US Aid Workers Injured in Gaza Amid Rising Tensions
Two US staff members from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation were injured in an attack during aid distribution, as violence escalates in the region.
Two American aid workers sustained injuries when two militants hurled grenades at a distribution center run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Khan Younis, according to statements from the organization. The GHF, which has been operating since May, has faced criticism for its current aid distribution approach which requires many Gazans to traverse dangerous combat zones. While the injured workers are reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care, the foundation emphasized that no other personnel or civilians were harmed in the Saturday incident.
Since the GHF's inception, over 400 Palestinians have reportedly been killed by Israeli forces in connection with food aid distributions, as noted by local doctors and the United Nations. This has led Israel to argue that the GHF's operations are designed to prevent assistance from reaching Hamas. In light of the attack, the GHF stated that it had previously alerted authorities about credible threats from Hamas, specifically against American workers, Palestinian aid staff, and civilians. Hamas has yet to issue a statement concerning the recent violence.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with ongoing Israeli military operations reportedly resulting in the deaths of 32 Palestinians on the same day of the attack. Despite the violence, Hamas expressed a willingness to engage in negotiations regarding a potential ceasefire with Israel. Reports suggest that this proposed ceasefire would include a phased release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees in Israeli facilities. Hamas is seeking revisions to the ceasefire plan, particularly assurances from the US that hostilities will not renew once the ceasefire period concludes.
Additionally, Hamas is advocating for the disbandment of the GHF's operations, pushing for aid distribution to be managed solely by the UN and its associated organizations, a proposal that Israel has consistently rejected. Reports indicate that around 50 hostages are still believed to be held in Gaza, with at least 20 confirmed alive. The humanitarian crisis in the territory has escalated, with Gaza’s health ministry reporting a total death toll of 57,338 since the escalation began following a significant Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and led to further violent hostilities.
