Tragic Collision: 13 Lives Lost in Naval Speedboat-Ferry Accident Near Mumbai

At least 13 individuals have lost their lives following a tragic accident where an Indian naval speedboat collided with a passenger ferry near Mumbai. The collision occurred as the privately operated ferry was heading to the popular Elephanta Caves. Among the deceased are three navy personnel, while more than 100 passengers have been rescued, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed.

The Indian Navy reported that the speedboat was undergoing engine trials when it experienced a malfunction, causing it to veer off course and strike the ferry. Eyewitness accounts describe a harrowing scene as the speedboat was seen circling out of control before the collision, which subsequently led to the ferry capsizing.

One passenger recounted the terrifying moments after the crash: "The speedboat crashed into our boat and water started entering our boat and it overturned. The driver asked us to wear lifejackets. I swam for 15 minutes before I was rescued by another boat."

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow, extending condolences to the families of the victims and hoping for the swift recovery of those injured. The Indian Navy has expressed its deep regret over the tragedy, emphasizing their commitment to investigating the cause of the accident.
