**US President aims to strengthen trade negotiations with aggressive tax policies amid international tensions**

**President Trump's recent announcement of a 25% tariff on products from South Korea and Japan reflects ongoing trade disputes and a push for more favorable conditions in international trade discussions.**

The United States is set to implement a significant 25% tariff on goods from South Korea and Japan starting on August 1, as announced by President Donald Trump via social media. The pronouncement comes with shared correspondence addressed to leaders of both nations. The White House indicated plans to send similar notifications to various other countries as the 90-day hiatus on some tariffs draws to a close.

These two letters reaffirm Trump’s dedication to his original tariff strategy, maintaining similar rates to those he proposed back in April. The previous announcement aimed to impose a 24% duty on Japanese products and a 25% tariff on South Korean imports. This push for tariffs was part of a broader "Liberation Day" initiative, which included steep import taxes on goods from numerous countries – in some cases, exceeding 40%.

Following backlash and turmoil in financial markets stemming from the initial tariffs, Trump had previously delayed several of the higher import taxes to facilitate negotiations while a 10% levy remained intact. The timeframe for negotiations to circumvent the higher tariffs is set to expire on July 9, and it appears Trump intends to extend the countdown by enforcing tariffs starting August 1.

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remarked that he anticipates a "busy couple of days" ahead, saying, “We’ve had a lot of people change their tune in terms of negotiations,” and that offers and proposals were flooding in.

Initially, Trump characterized his April tariffs as “reciprocal,” arguing they were essential to combat what he deemed unfair trade practices affecting American exports. He has also announced tariffs on vital sectors like steel and automobiles, justifying these moves through national security claims, and has suggested further tariffs on pharmaceuticals and lumber.

These complex, multi-faceted policies are complicating trade negotiations, with auto tariffs emerging as a crucial hurdle in talks with Japan and South Korea. Meanwhile, the US has succeeded in reaching trade agreements with the UK and Vietnam, alongside a partial agreement with China, although significant issues remain unaddressed in all instances.

The European Union (EU) is also reportedly in discussions that would allow for a continued provisional 10% tax on most goods shipped to the US, but they are aiming to negotiate reductions on Trump's 25% car tariff and the hefty 50% tariff imposed on steel and aluminum imports.

Following constructive discussions, a spokesperson for the EU mentioned that President Ursula von der Leyen had a “good exchange” with Trump. Not long ago, Trump had threatened the EU with a 50% tax if an agreement was not reached. Recently, he warned Japan could face an even steeper tariff of "30% or 35%" should negotiations falter by midweek.
