Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy has been shot dead in Lviv, Ukrainian authorities have reported.

Police received reports of the shooting in the Frankivsk district of Lviv, western Ukraine, around midday local time on Saturday. The identity of the shooter remains unknown, and it is unclear if the perpetrator has been apprehended.

Parubiy, 54, gained prominence as a key figure in Ukraine's Maidan movement, which sought closer ties with the European Union (EU) and played a significant role in the ousting of pro-Russian former president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the incident as a terrible murder and extended his condolences to Parubiy's family and friends.

The details surrounding the attack are still unfolding, but unverified reports indicate that Parubiy was shot multiple times by a gunman on an e-bike disguised as a courier.

Ukraine's national police, Lviv Regional police, and the security services are leading the investigation into this shocking event. President Zelensky emphasized that all necessary resources are being mobilized to find the individual responsible for this heinous act.
